Five years of research on 'functional agrobiodiversity' (FAB) was conducted in six countries within the European FABulous Farmers project. The project aimed to reduce dependence on external inputs such as fertilisers and plant protection products by encouraging certain agro-ecological measures. Last week, the project came to an end. "The project has already succeeded in its goal," explains Bart Schoukens of Boerennatuur Vlaanderen. "The results of the pilot projects confirm the scientific research: a 30 per cent reduction of external inputs is possible by applying FAB measures in agriculture."
